@FreshfromtheGarden
Hello! My name is Anissa (17-year-old Ambassador Girl Scout!) I am a 2021-2022 Gold Award recipient with a passion for educating other about the environment and helping my community!
Inspiration/ How I found my cause: |
During quarantine, I realized that gardening provided accessible food to my family, even when local grocery store shelves were empty and thought it would be a beneficial time to garden for other families.
What is a Gold Award? |
A Gold award can be earned by a Girl Scout in the Senior or Ambassador ranking that wants to make an everlasting impact on their community by creating a unique project on what they feel passionate about! Only 5.4% of Girl scouts have successfully earned this award.
What is Fresh from the Garden about? |
I am on a mission to help spread awareness on Environmental Issues and Promote Food Security in my community.
Objectives: |
The Objective of my project is to teach my community how to garden through a series of courses for beginners. I touched based on Composting, Winter Sowing, and Raise bed/ Container Gardening.
Accomplishments: |
With the help of my team, we have encouraged people of all ages to start a garden and educate them about the many benefits that come with it. I have also distributed seedlings, grown from the Winter Sowing method. By May 2021, I distributed these seedlings to members of my community who have been following me through this journey. My goal was accomplished and I managed to share over 100 plant seedlings to people of my community!

Topics!
Composting: |
Composting material can be referred to as "Black gold" and can be used as a natural fertilizer for your garden. This texture is formed of decomposed/ recycled food/vegetable waste and other natural scraps such as leaves and grass that can be found in your backyard. Creating your own Composting pile has many benefits such as reducing waste in landfills, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing water usage.
Winter Sowing: |
The concept of Winter Sowing is starting seeds outdoors in the winter. We would do this by creating mini greenhouses using clear containers such as milk jugs; soda liter bottles, or any type of containers (Lids of gallon jugs should be screwed off and other containers should have poked holes on the top). These containers are to be left outside all winter long and allowing these seeds to be with the elements, such as rain and snow. By early Spring, your seeds will germinate and you should have seedlings that can be planted in your garden! This process does not require much work, since you are leaving out your containers all winter. This method creates sturdier seedlings that are ready to go by the spring time (depending on the seed).
Raised Bed/ Container Gardening: |
When Springtime arrives and all of your plants are ready to be planted, there are a variety of ways and materials you are able to use to achieve your very own garden. Raised beds are grown on the ground and boarders are used to support these. Container Gardens are transportable and good for both Flowers and Vegetables.
